APPLICATION:

The New Music Course with Joe Morris is a three-day international online program for improvisers, performers, and composers. The mentor of the course is composer/improviser multi-instrumentalist Joe Morris.

Participants apply with a selected portfolio relevant to their practice — such as recordings, scores, or other supporting materials—and during the course, present their work in a format of their choice.

Each presentation may include, but is not limited to: an overview of the participant’s artistic practice (performance, composition, or improvisation), discussion of past experiences, analysis of selected works or performances, questions, goals, challenges, and areas of interest. Participants may use recordings, demonstrations, screen sharing, slides, or any other materials suitable for the online setting. Those applying in multiple roles (for example, as both composer and improviser) submit materials for all relevant areas and integrate them into a single, cohesive presentation.

All presentations are followed by the mentor’s commentary, and each session culminates in a group discussion with all participants. These discussions encourage active engagement, inviting participants to raise questions, respond to one another’s presentations, develop emerging themes, share ideas, thoughts, critiques, propositions, or analyses, and contribute in any way that supports collective inquiry. The emphasis throughout is on fostering dialogue, critical reflection, and the interrogation of concepts and practices.
